"After seeing the set up at Reaseheath College, animal care is something I will definitely think about studying in the future."

Students from St Mary’s Catholic College, Wallasey, recently took part in an inspiring visit to Reaseheath College, giving them valuable insight into further education and future career pathways.

A group of students from Years 8, 10 and 11 went on the trip to the UK's leading land-based college in Nantwich, Cheshire.

The trip included an informative talk on the wide range of courses available, the qualifications required, and practical arrangements such as on-site accommodation and minibus transport for students.

Following this, students explored the Reaseheath campus, visiting the mini zoo and aquarium and seeing specialist facilities in areas including animal care, engineering and motor maintenance, and uniformed services.

The visit offered students a first-hand look at college life and the diverse opportunities available beyond secondary education, helping them to make more informed decisions about their next steps.

Year 9 student, Kandi, said she was impressed by the college’s grounds and particularly enjoyed the tour of the zoo and aquarium.

She added: “After seeing the set up at Reaseheath College, animal care is something I will definitely think about studying in the future.”

Staff at St Mary’s praised their students’ conduct during the visit, who will receive ‘Friday Rewards’ in recognition of their exemplary behaviour.

The visit reflects the strong partnership that St Mary’s Catholic College and Holy Family Catholic Multi Academy Trust (HFCMAT), of which St Mary’s is part, have built with Reaseheath College over the past three years. St John Plessington Catholic College, also a member of the Trust, is planning a visit in March which is currently being organised by HFCMAT’s careers lead, Mr Les Wellens.

The collaboration has already led to positive outcomes, with former students pursuing careers in animal management and farming.

Mr Kevin Maddocks, headteacher of St Mary’s Catholic College, said: “Over the years, we have formed a fantastic relationship with Reaseheath College, which provides our students with the chance to take part in visits tailored to the courses and pathways they’re most interested in. Before each trip, our heads of learning and heads of year select students who will benefit the most, so the experience is both useful and insightful.

“Seeing these environments first-hand really brings learning to life and helps our students picture themselves in future education or training.”

CEO of Holy Family Catholic Multi Academy Trust, Mr Andy Moor, added: “At Holy Family Catholic Multi Academy Trust, we are committed to providing all our students with experiences that broaden their horizons and prepare them for life beyond school. Our partnership with Reaseheath College is a perfect example of this in action, giving young people the chance to explore specialist courses, gain practical insight, and make informed choices about their future pathways.”
